Hey There Mobsters!

Spring is upon us and the Head Chicken Wrangler from Alchemist Farm is offering Chicken and Quail Keeping classes to get you setup for success with your flocks 🙂

 

Registration is now open for our two workshop dates in 2019. New for 2019 is our Quail Keeping Class

  We will be doing something a little different this year and offer two workshop days with slightly different class offerings to cover the wide variety of information you all are interested in learning.  Send us an email at [email protected] to secure your slot in one of our classes or for a whole workshop day.

Once registered you will receive a packet of information via email with details on parking, and nitty gritty fun logistics of how to maximize your learning with us.

 

Workshop day #1 

Saturday March 9th. This workshop day will be held in Santa Rosa at:         90 Mountain View Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95407

On that day we will be offering our:

10am-12pm Beginning Chicken Keeping Class

Lunch Break

1-3pm Advanced Chicken Keeping Class

3:30-5pm Quail Keeping Class

 

See below for full descriptions of each class. Workshop day #1 will not be held on our farm in Sebastopol because of the possibility of rain.

 

Workshop day #2

Saturday April 20th (Easter Weekend!) and will be held on our farm in Sebastopol.

On that day we will be offering our:

10am-12pm Beginning Chicken Keeping Class

Lunch Break

1pm-3pm Advanced Chicken Keeping Class

1/2 hour snack break

3:30-5pm Rooster and Quail Processing Class

 

Beginning Chicken Keeping Class Outline

*All about the egg, store bought vs. pasture raised (we will crack a store bought egg vs. pastured egg side by side to show signs of nutrition, freshness and fertility)

* Overview of breeds of chickens, choosing the right breeds for your back yard be it breeds for pets, strong egg producers, meat producers, or dual purpose. (A handout covering all of these breeds will be provided)

* Purchasing chicks.

* Brooding chicks (including all equipment needed).

*Building and or purchasing a predator proof coop with a chickens well being and optimal comfort in mind.

* Equipment for feeding and watering your chickens.

*Correct feed for the various stages of your chickens life, where to get it and how to properly store it.

*Proper bedding for your coop, how to clean your coop and sustainable reuse of the bedding from the coop.

*Setting yourself up for success in how you relate to your flock and daily interactions.

*Normal chicken behavior vs. basic signs of illness.

*Collection and proper storage of eggs.

*Class questions

Advanced Chicken Keeping Class Outline

*Home breeding and incubation.
*Overview of various incubators on the market.
*Proper incubation technique, what temperature and humidity to be aiming for. (A handout will be provided covering this).
*Incubating with a machine vs. a broody hen, health benefits of both methods.
*Selecting eggs to incubate, testing for fertility and viability. (We will crack an egg open to show signs of fertility).
*Candling of eggs
*Feather and egg color genetics of breeds, how to create your own breed (A handout will be provided with charts for easy reference).
*Holistic health management of the flock.
*Setting up proper biosecurity and how to maintain it.
*Proper wing trimming technique
*Signs and symptoms of sickness, overview of various common illnesses.
*What to keep in the home veterinary kit.
*Treatments for common ailments.
*Class questions

 Quail Keeping Class

*How to properly incubate and hatch quail eggs
*Brooding of quail, setting yourself up for success
*Proper housing, feeding, protection from predators
*Group harmony
*Proper nutrition for egg vs meat production
*What to keep in your home veterinary kit

Rooster and Quail Processing Class

*Raising of a rooster that is safe to handle

*Setting up a proper processing space and tools to have at the ready

*Ending the life of a rooster in a swift and humane way

*Proper cleaning and processing of rooster without skin

*Proper cleaning and processing of rooster with feathers plucked and skin on

*Use of all parts of the rooster from feathers to feet

*Recipes to try at home with your freshly processed rooster

*Raising of male quail

*Ending the life of a quail in a swift and humane way

*Proper cleaning and processing of quail

*Recipes for your freshly processed quail

*Class questions

Class Costs and Discounts

Cost for each class is $65 which includes handouts to take home. If you are interested in participating in two classes the cost is $120. If all three classes interest you then the cost would be $150 for the days education. Children 12 and under may attend for free with a paying adult, a second child is $25 per class.

Class participants receive 15% off any chick or hatching egg order placed in 2018. If preordered before the class date we will have chicks and or hatching eggs available for pickup on the day of the class.

Each class is limited to 30 participants.
